Aviation English Programmes

Designed to meet the English-language training requirements of international civil aviation and air traffic management personnel, MLS offers a series of short-course certificate programmes in aviation-based professional English-language communication skills up to ICAO Operational Level 4 and beyond.

New language standards for pilots and air traffic controllers ratified by the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization in March 2003 have strengthened the requirement for English-language proficiency in the accommodation of international flights, raising levels from a recommended practice to a minimum standard.

ICAO has established a minimum level of language proficiency for the common English language spoken by flight crew and air traffic controllers and a rating scale that describes this required level of proficiency.

Following our long history of involvement and co-operation with the international civil aviation industry in the provision of English language training programmes, MLS International College has become one of the first of the language schools in the United Kingdom to fully incorporate the new English-language requirements in its course design and to offer testing and assessment of civil aviation personnel according to the new approved ICAO Language Proficiency Rating Scale.

Specialised Courses

The MLS curriculum has been devised to meet the specific training objectives of flight crew and air traffic controllers. At all levels, trainees are encouraged to broaden their range of operational and organisational skills. The programmes of tuition provide instruction and practice in the day-to-day language skills necessary for personnel in posts related to international civil aviation and air-traffic management. Language acquisition through active participation in practical coursework is considered fundamental to the learning process.

Absorbing, stimulating and wide-ranging in its delivery and content, the specialised training in English language aviation vocabulary, terminology and phraseology has as its focus the development of an increased understanding of the functional communication skills required by aviation personnel for the safe and effective management of international flights.

Assessments

Participants are formally assessed on entry and again on exit. Progress is monitored throughout the course by means of a continued series of informal assessments. Written reports are prepared on completion of the course in which the progress and the performance of each student is recorded and his/her English-language ability is graded according to the provisions of the ICAO Language Proficiency Rating Scale.
